On what began as an ordinary day, 18-year-old twins, Makarem and Ikram, were caught in the chaos of war when shelled exploded near their school in el-Obeid, Sudan. While listening to their teachers during lessons, they heard strange noises, which were soon followed by terrifying explosions that wounded several students and caused panic to spread. Makarem was injured, requiring urgent medical attention, but her sister Ikram was unharmed, having been in a different part of the school.
Sadly, the attack resulted in the death of Makarem's English teacher alongside 13 classmates. Chaos ensued, with injured students transported to hospitals via local residents’ cars, as the ambulance service was unavailable. Both girls were initially separated, only for Ikram to realize hours later that her sister was recovering in the hospital.
Despite the horror of the incident in August 2024, when reports indicate approximately 150,000 people have died since the onset of Sudan's civil war in April 2023, Makarem and Ikram are determined to continue their education. Returning to school wasn’t easy, filled with memories of their loss and trauma, but they show resilience as they engage in their studies, supported by the school’s staff who provided psychological help.
The situation remains dire for education in Sudan, with millions of children out of school due to conflict. Makarem, who dreams of becoming a doctor, is currently repeating her final school year, while Ikram pursues her degree in English literature, inspired by their lost teacher's ambition. Through their determination, they embody hope for a brighter future, resisting the despair surrounding them.
