In brief
Kelechi Ejikeme and Amechi Mandi are leading the way in blending traditional African elements with contemporary design.
African designers are stepping onto the global stage, reshaping the interior design landscape with their unique cultural perspectives. Two notable figures are Kelechi Ejikeme and Amechi Mandi, who are infusing heritage into modern design. After a decade in law, Nigerian-British designer Ejikeme launched her own eco-friendly rug collection inspired by Nigeria’s landscapes, emphasizing how every piece reflects a part of home. Producing her rugs with jute—a material from the same plant that provides essential food ingredients—Ejikeme’s creations showcase the beauty of sustainable practices.Mandi, a Cameroonian-Nigerian designer, shifted from fashion to interior design to highlight genuine African aesthetics, moving away from "clichéd" motifs to explore deeper cultural roots. His award-winning work draws inspiration from pre-colonial traditions, integrating indigenous textiles into cushions, throws, and wallpapers with contemporary flair. Both designers lament the slow progression of African interior design compared to fashion, noting that the continent's history has not been well documented. While Mandi observes that many Africans lean towards foreign brands, he and Ejikeme believe that as disposable income rises, there’s a growing desire among Africans to decorate their spaces with elements that tell their personal stories. This shift signals a powerful cultural renaissance in African interior design, marrying functionality with rich narratives in every crafted piece.
