The control of the U.S. House of Representatives hangs in the balance as Republicans aim for the 218 seats needed to secure dominance. As of now, they're just seven seats shy, while Democrats are in search of 15 more to regain a majority. Following the Republican shifts in the Senate and phone after the recent presidential elections, President-elect Donald Trump may have a chance to steer legislation once he is inaugurated on January 20, 2025.

House control is crucial, granting the winning party the power to steer budget initiatives and potentially initiate impeachment processes. Democrats remain optimistic that the outstanding votes in key battlegrounds could tip the scales in their favor.

In California, five pivotal races could redefine House control. Republican Congresswoman Michelle Steel leads Democrat Derek Tran in California's 45th, while Democratic candidate George Whitesides is closely trailing Republican Mike Garcia in the 27th district. Similarly, Republican Ken Calvert shows a slight lead against Democrat Will Rollins in the 41st, while David Valadao is ahead of Democrat Rudy Salas in California's 22nd. Additionally, Republican John Duarte currently holds a narrow margin against Adam Gray in the 13th.

In Arizona, two races remain razor-thin, with less than 2% separating opponents in both the 6th and 1st districts. In Maine, incumbent Congressman Jared Golden's race is similarly uncertain against Austin Theriault, with nearly all votes counted. Lastly, in Ohio's 9th congressional district, Democrat Marcy Kaptur is clinging to a slim 0.3 point edge against her GOP challenger, Derek Merrin.

These contests underline the significance of each vote as both parties vie for control of the House in what promises to be a tumultuous election season.
