Graphic Images Shocked Family at Los Angeles Court
The opening day of a preliminary hearing in Los Angeles revealed “worst nightmare” photos to the parents of 14‑year‑old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Prosecutors presented dismembered body fragments, a torso and a head, in a Tesla found at a Hollywood tow yard.
Investigator Detective Joshua Byers testified that the suspect, a 21‑year‑old singer who performs under the stage name D4vd, ordered and used a body bag, chainsaw, inflatable pool and shovel online to cover up the crime.
Burke pleaded not guilty to murder and sexual abuse. Prosecutors argue the evidence is sufficient to move the case to trial. This hearing is a step to prove the court’s interest in the case can proceed further.
Prosecutor Beth Silverman repeatedly checked with Celeste’s parents before showing each graphic image, warning of the violence and allowing them the option to step away. The mother, Mercedes Hernandez, was told beforehand that the images were graphic and that the courtroom would be restrictive. She chose to stay and was visibly upset.
An early moment was the presentation of a tattoo test that connected the suspect and Celeste: a red ink “Celeste” inked on Burke’s left ring finger and a matching “Shhh…” on their right index finger. A photograph of Celeste’s finger was shown with the same tattoo to demonstrate a link.
The small downtown court filled with reporters and social media creators before the hearing began. Lined up outside, members of the public and influencers had passed a lottery to watch the proceeding live. The courtroom atmosphere shifted once the suspect was brought in, shackled, and wearing an orange jail uniform.
The case will extend over the next few days, with interviews of further witnesses and additional evidence presented. Witnesses will testify about how the suspect allegedly threatened the victim with retaliation should she reveal his relationship with her. The parents’ lawyer said, “They are at a loss for words and are just attempting to support their daughter as best they can.”
