In brief

A nurse was tragically killed and another injured while responding to an Ebola alert in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Local youths mistakenly blamed health workers for spreading the virus, leading to the attack. The World Health Organization condemned the violence, urging protection for frontline staff. Regional authorities, including Uganda, have tightened travel restrictions to curb spread. This incident underscores the urgent need for global support to safeguard medical teams in outbreak zones.

A nurse was killed, and a fellow health worker seriously injured, after they checked a village for Ebola signs in eastern DRC.

The attackers – local youths who feared the workers were contaminating water – shot the nurse in the abdomen and slammed the other into a nearby bush.

The World Health Organization condemned the attack and called on governments to protect medical teams. Uganda has now banned non‑essential travel to the region and will quarantine returning citizens for 21 days.

The outbreak, which began in May, has already claimed more than 4,800 lives in DRC and spread to Kenya and Nigeria last month. Health experts warn that every attack on frontline staff heightens fear and hampers efforts to stop the virus.
