At least 31 people have died after a powerful cyclone struck Madagascar, says the disaster authority in the Indian Ocean island. Cyclone Gezani made landfall on Tuesday, hitting the island's main port, Toamasina. Madagascar's disaster management office reported total chaos, with houses collapsing in the impact zone where bodies were found. Neighbourhoods faced power shortages as power lines snapped, and debris littered the streets. Colonel Michael Randrianirina, the military leader, described the situation, highlighting that roughly 75% of Toamasina was destroyed. The cyclone reached winds of up to 250 km/hour (155 mph), causing buildings to collapse and leaving 400,000 residents in distress. As of Wednesday, the cyclone had weakened to a moderate storm, moving away from the coast.
