Colombian authorities have apprehended Élder José Arteaga Hernandez, the alleged architect of an assassination attempt on Senator Miguel Uribe during a political rally last month. Uribe, a conservative senator and a contender for the 2026 presidential election, was shot twice in the head in Bogotá, adding to the seriousness of his condition.

Arteaga is believed to have influenced a 15-year-old to execute the attack, leading to the arrest of four individuals, including the teenage shooter. The motive behind the shooting, which took place on June 7, remains ambiguous. Meanwhile, police chief Carlos Fernando Triana reported that Arteaga has a lengthy criminal background and faces charges for "aggravated attempted homicide."

The authorities allege that Arteaga orchestrated the operation, recruited the gunman, and supplied him with a weapon. The teen, who was captured while fleeing, has pleaded not guilty. Uribe, critical of President Gustavo Petro, announced his presidential candidacy last year and hails from a notable political family affected by violence in Colombia's turbulent history. The shooting spurred widespread silent protests from tens of thousands of Colombians advocating for political safety.
