South African TV presenter and rapper Molemo Maarohanye, better known as Jub Jub, was arrested Sunday after police say he allegedly kidnapped a taxi driver and fired a gun at him during a dispute over a girlfriend.

Police say the confrontation took place in Edenvale – a suburb about 25 km from Johannesburg – when Maarohanye accused the driver of courting his girlfriend. He allegedly forced the driver into his vehicle and shot a gun toward him. The driver escaped unharmed and immediately drove to a police station, police said.

Maarohanye, a former pop‑star who has hosted the reality‑TV show "Uyajola 9/9," has a long history of court‑room drama. In 2012 he was convicted of murder and attempted murder for a drag‑race incident that killed four schoolchildren and wounded two others; the High Court later reduced the verdict to manslaughter.

In 2023 he faced rape, attempted murder and assault charges after an ex‑girlfriend alleged abuse; those charges were withdrawn in 2024 by the National Prosecuting Authority because of insufficient evidence.

He is scheduled to appear at Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for an initial hearing, police said.

Context: celebrity, crime, and social media

The incident highlights a pattern of violent conduct intertwined with a celebrity lifestyle that amplifies scrutiny. It also raises questions about how media portrayal and public opinion influence legal outcomes for high‑profile figures.
