Tragic shooting in Montreal
A gunman opened fire in Côte‑des‑Neiges, killing a police officer, a civilian named Michael Mizrahi and shooting himself. The officer, Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, had joined the force in 2021 and is remembered for his dedication.
The attack halted metro service and brought traffic to a standstill. Police said the suspect was acting alone, but officials are exploring a possible incel‑driven motive.
The Canadian government issued an emergency alert and the RCMP warned other forces about a document encouraging raids on police. Prime Minister Carney described the event as "horrendous" and expressed thoughts for the victims.
Montreal’s mayor and provincial leaders offered condolences, stating that such acts have no place in Canada. The incident remains under investigation, with the Bureau of Independent Investigations handling inquiries.
Community fallout and memorials
Flags flew at half‑staff in honour of Benredouane. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs mourned Mizrahi, describing him as a beloved community member and calling him an “innocent victim.”
Police continue to investigate the motives, while the public grapples with the unsettling reminder of gun violence in everyday life.
