Montreal Shooting Leaves 3 Dead, Fuels Debate Over Gun Crime
A midday attack in Montreal’s diverse Côte‑des‑Neiges neighborhood left a police officer, a civilian, and the armed attacker dead. Police say the suspect, who was shot immediately, acted alone.
Witnesses reported a gun protruding from a window, heard shots, and called emergency services. Diversion of traffic and temporary closure of local metro services followed the incident.
The Canadian police chief announced a disturbing warning that a circulating document allegedly urged citizens to shoot officers. Early speculation links the attacker to the misogynistic incel movement, though authorities have yet to confirm a motive.
The shooting marks the first line‑of‑duty police fatality in Montreal in 25 years. The officer, Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, was honoured with flags at half‑staff in his memory.
The civilian victim, Michael Moshe Mizrahi, was identified by the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs as a beloved community member. Police have not labelled the attack antisemitic, and no confirmed link to an extremist document has surfaced.
National leaders—including Prime Minister Mark Carney and Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette—expressed horror and condolences, calling the act unprovoked and intolerable in Canada.
