Mette‑Marit, Norway’s Crown Princess, has undergone a successful lung transplant at Oslo’s largest hospital. The surgery followed her diagnosis of a rare type of pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, a disease that progressively chips away at the lungs and can shorten life by a year or more.

Doctors say the transplant went well, and she will stay in the hospital for a few weeks to be monitored closely – a standard protocol for transplant patients, the spokesperson said.

In the palace’s statement, Prince Haakon announced a change to his schedule so he can be with his wife during the recovery period.

The move comes two days after Marius Borg Høiby, Mette‑Marit’s son, was sentenced to four years in prison for two rape convictions, a development the family has not shied away from.

The transplant has brought relief to a royal family already in the spotlight, especially after the queen’s public apologies regarding a friendship with Jeffrey Epstein earlier this year.
