The European Court of Human Rights says Turkey must free activist Osman Kavala after nearly a decade in prison.

Osman Kavala, a Turkish philanthropist and activist, has spent almost ten years behind bars for allegations linked to the 2013 Gezi Park protests and a 2016 coup attempt. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has declared that his continued detention was unlawful, calling the punishment "inhuman and degrading" and politically motivated. In response, Turkey was ordered to release him immediately. The ruling highlights systemic problems in Turkey’s judicial system and raises concerns about the suppression of civil society. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled Tuesday that Turkey must free Osman Kavala immediately. The activist, famed for his philanthropy, was imprisoned nearly ten years after a life sentence in 2022 for charges linked to 2013 protests and a 2016 coup attempt.

The court said his detention was "unlawful" and "politically motivated." It called the life sentence an “inhuman and degrading treatment.”

Kavala’s case has exposed a “systemic problem” in Turkey regarding the prosecution of dissenting voices—highlighting how the judiciary can be used to silence critics and human‑rights defenders.

Even though Turkey’s courts claim independence, the ECHR has sent a clear message: the country must comply with its binding rulings or face further scrutiny from the Council of Europe.
