On Friday early morning, a chain‑reaction crash on I‑95 in Virginia killed five people and injured dozens. The incident began when 48‑year‑old bus driver Jing Sheng Dong collided into a line of vehicles slowed by a construction zone.

The crash killed a four‑member family from Greenfield, Massachusetts, on their way to a wedding, and a 25‑year‑old woman from Worcester, Massachusetts. Dong was already facing two involuntary manslaughter indictments for that accident.

On Monday, a grand jury added three new manslaughter charges and an additional reckless‑driving charge, bringing Dong’s total charges to five.

Earlier this year, Dong was cited for driving 73 mph in a 55 mph zone in Virginia and 72 mph in a 50 mph zone in Maryland, showing a pattern of speeding violations.

The bus, operated by E&P Travel Inc. of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, was traveling from New York to North Carolina when the crash occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board has opened an investigation into the incident.

Prosecutor Eric Olsen said Dong will be transported to jail once he is released from the hospital. No attorney is listed on the case documents, and responses from lawyers for related cases were not received.
