A freight train driver involved in a tragic accident with a bus in Bangkok has tested positive for drugs, leading to serious safety concerns and charges of reckless driving. The incident, which took place at the Asoke-Din Daeng railway crossing, resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and left many others injured. Reports indicate that the bus had become stuck on the tracks, unable to move due to heavy traffic, which prevented the crossing barriers from functioning properly.

The chaotic nature of the Asoke-Din Daeng crossing, known for heavy congestion, has been highlighted by authorities. In response to the crash, both the bus driver and the guard responsible for lowering the railway barrier have also been charged. As a measure of safety, the Thai rail transport department has mandated drug and alcohol testing for all train operators before their shifts.

Initial investigations from the train's black box revealed that emergency brakes were only engaged approximately 100 meters before the collision, insufficient time to prevent the crash. Experts have pointed out that over 100,000 vehicles traverse this crossing daily, often leading to risky behaviors among drivers, such as ignoring safety barriers to avoid delays. This normalization of risk can lead to catastrophic outcomes, as evidenced by this recent disaster.
