A shooting outside a residence hall left five people injured – one critically – at VSU’s campus, with police still investigating.

Late Saturday night, a gunfire incident outside Virginia State University’s residence halls resulted in five injured students, with one in critical condition, according to the university. The campus has reopened, but a strong police presence remains while the investigation continues. VSU, a historically Black university in Chesterfield County, was preparing to start classes the next day.

Five people were injured, one critically, in a shooting outside a residence hall at Virginia State University on Saturday night.

Police responded at around 1:28 a.m. local time (5:28 GMT) and the five victims were taken to local hospitals. Four of the injuries were not life‑threatening, while one student remains in critical condition.

It is still unclear whether any suspects have been arrested, and the university said the campus lockdown has been lifted but a significant police presence remains on site.

Chesterfield County Police, with help from campus police and other local agencies, are leading the investigation.

Virginia State University, a historically Black college with about 5,000 students and located 20 miles south of Richmond, was set to start classes on Monday.
