President Donald Trump has suspended the US green card lottery scheme in the wake of a mass shooting at Brown University last week in which two people were killed. The suspect, a Portuguese man, entered the United States through the diversity lottery program in 2017 and was granted a green card.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced this pause, stating it is a precautionary measure to 'ensure no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous programme'. The suspect, Claudio Neves Valente, was also connected to the shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor earlier that week.

The diversity lottery program offers 50,000 visas annually through a random selection process aimed at individuals from countries with low immigration rates to the U.S.

Valente was found dead in a storage facility after a manhunt, leading authorities to link him to both incidents. The tragic circumstances have reignited debates about the efficacy and safety implications of immigration policies in the U.S.
