In the heart of northern Ontario's dense wilderness, a forest mystery has surfaced! Researchers have uncovered a runestone carved with 255 runes and an image of a boat, hidden beneath soil and roots for years. The stone, found on private land near the town of Wawa in 2015 after two trees fell, hints at stories from the past. Initially, the idea of Vikings was exciting, given the lone Viking settlement in North America is in Newfoundland. However, experts quickly dismissed this theory.

This runestone isn’t a forgery like the infamous Kensington Runestone. Kristel Zilmer, a runologist from the University of Oslo, remarked on the importance of the find, which showcases how knowledge traveled with people across time.

Archaeologist Ryan Primrose, surprised by the discovery, shared his astonishment, saying, "I had never expected to encounter a runestone during my career." Now, the spotlight is on this ancient artifact as researchers enlist the help of the public to uncover its mysteries!
