Police believe the driver fell asleep at the wheel; he was taken into custody and the incident is under investigation.
The accident left 12 people dead and 57 passengers and two drivers trapped in the wreck; emergency crews rescued 35 passengers and two drivers before cranes lifted the entire vehicle out of the ditch.
Hungary’s ambulance service treated one patient with life‑threatening injuries, nine with serious injuries, and 37 with minor injuries.
Prime Minister Péter Magyar offered his sincere condolences to the victims’ families and urged speedy recoveries for those hurt.
