In brief

A U.S. nursing assistant was shot dead by a Mexican police officer after allegedly speeding towards the officer.

The American man was driving a Mustang with New Mexico license plates when the shooting occurred on a Sunday in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, just across the border from El Paso, Texas. Mexican authorities stated that the policeman was in the vicinity to assist with a legal warrant when the car suddenly accelerated toward him.Chihuahua regional prosecutor, Carlos Manuel Salas, explained that the driver attempted to flee, prompting the officer to fire. The officer has been taken into custody as the incident is under investigation, with the help of a video captured by a car passenger. Prosecutor Salas described the event as “regrettable” but suggested that the actions of the officer might be justifiable given the circumstances, where the speeding vehicle nearly struck him.Authorities have not publicly identified the deceased, though he has been reported by Mexican media as Julián Alfredo Rodríguez Medina, a nursing assistant from El Paso, Texas. The investigation continues as both sides await further clarification on the incident.
