Russia could attack a NATO country within the next five years, the Western military alliance's chief has said in a stark new warning.
Russia is already escalating its covert campaign against our societies, Mark Rutte stated during a speech in Germany. He urged that we must be prepared for the scale of war reminiscent of what our ancestors faced.
This warning aligns with similar assessments made by Western intelligence agencies, despite Russia considering such claims as exaggerated.
The remarks come amidst ongoing efforts by US President Trump to negotiate an end to Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
Vladimir Putin claimed earlier this month that Russia isn't seeking conflict with Europe but would be ready to respond if provoked. However, many recall that similar reassurances preceded the invasion of Ukraine when Russian troops amassed at the border.
Rutte pointed out that supporting Ukraine is vital for European security, arguing that if Russia succeeds in Ukraine, NATO would face increased risks along its borders.
As NATO nations grapple with military readiness, the Russian economy is reportedly fully committed to war efforts, producing substantial quantities of military equipment each month. Meanwhile, many Western nations struggle to match this pace and may require years to ramp up military production.
In light of growing hybrid warfare tactics, including cyber-attacks and disinformation campaigns, NATO members must prepare for potential conflicts. Rutte warned complacency could lead to dire consequences if vigilance isn't maintained.
