TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — In a dramatic courtroom scene, U.S. District Judge Zahid N. Quraishi confronted federal prosecutors over their controversial management in New Jersey. A hearing turned heated as the judge called out Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosenblum and his team for failing to maintain the court's trust amid allegations of mishandling a child sexual abuse case.
Judge Quraishi's frustration stems from a recent decision by another judge to rule the Trump administration's appointment of acting U.S. Attorneys as unconstitutional. With three officials currently in their positions pending an appeal, the judge demanded their appearance to provide clarity on their management structure. Accusing prosecutors of attempting to 'blindside' the court, he conveyed that trust has been lost, not only from the court but also from the public.
The judge postponed sentencing in the child exploitation case, pointing to the rushed plea agreement and a lack of thorough investigation. If satisfactory answers are not provided during the upcoming testimony on May 4, the judge indicated he may summon higher-ranking officials from the Justice Department to clarify the situation further.
