In a shocking turn of events, Bruno, a seven-year-old bloodhound and renowned sniffer dog, tragically lost his life after consuming sausages filled with nails that were maliciously thrown into his kennel. His trainer, Arcangelo Caressa, described Bruno as a true hero, having helped locate nine missing persons throughout his commendable career, even receiving recognition from Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.
Meloni expressed her outrage over this "vile, cowardly, unacceptable" act and paid tribute to Bruno's contributions. Caressa, visibly heartbroken, vowed to hold those responsible accountable, suggesting that the heinous act was likely revenge against Bruno for his role in dismantling dog fighting rings.
The heart-wrenching announcement of Bruno's death came on a Friday, with Caressa stating, "Today I died with you." He recounted finding the bloodhound in distress at the Endas search and rescue training center in Taranto, Puglia, highlighting the loyalty and bravery Bruno showed throughout his life.
Italy's police and prosecutor's office are currently investigating the incident, with Caressa claiming he knows the culprits behind the attack. Echoing a firm stance, he stated, "I know who you are, and you will pay for it." This tragic event has also drawn the attention of local animal rights activist and MP Michela Vittoria Brambilla, who has urged swift justice for Bruno.
Due to legislation spearheaded by Brambilla, anyone found guilty of killing an animal with torture may face a penalty of up to four years in prison and a hefty fine. Brambilla emphasized the need for the law to apply in Bruno’s case, as she mourned the investigation into the "long and painful death" he endured. "We owe it to this noble animal," she asserted.
