A Russian military plane has crashed in the occupied Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, killing 29 people on board, the Russian defence ministry has said. Wreckage of the An-26 aircraft was found on Tuesday after the plane lost contact with authorities during a 'routine flight', according to the ministry. A 'technical failure' was blamed, with no external damage to the aircraft, indicating that missiles, drones, or birds are not suspected to have caused the crash. Seven crew members and 23 passengers were aboard the flight when it went down over Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. An investigation has been launched by Russia's Investigative Committee into potential flight safety violations. Communication with the plane was lost at approximately 18:00 local time, leading to a search and rescue operation that discovered the wreckage. Ukraine has not issued a comment regarding the incident. The An-26 has been utilized mainly for transporting cargo and passengers and has a history of past incidents. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to complicate the situation in Crimea, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky advocating for a withdrawal of Russian forces from the region.
