BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) — Police intensified their search Wednesday for a suspect in the fatal shooting of professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who was shot at his home earlier in the week. Loureiro, a 47-year-old physicist and director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, was fatally shot on Monday night. He died in a local hospital the following day, prompting a homicide investigation that remains ongoing with no suspects in custody as of Wednesday morning. This event comes in the wake of a tragic shooting incident at Brown University nearby that left two students dead. Investigators made no progress in identifying the gunman involved there either. Loureiro joined MIT in 2016 and was known for his commitment to advancing clean energy technology. He was raised in Portugal, where he earned his doctorate before moving to MIT. The MIT president described Loureiro's death as a “shocking loss,” while the Portuguese president expressed condolences, noting his influence on science. Witnesses in the area reported hearing loud noises consistent with gunfire. Loureiro’s passing has left a significant impact on his students and colleagues, who visited his home to pay their respects.
