JASPER, Ga. (AP) — In a startling event on Tuesday, police responded to reports of a shooting at a Veterans Affairs clinic in Jasper, located at the southern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia. Authorities confirmed that at least one individual was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Responders arrived at the VA clinic around 1:30 p.m. and confronted the suspected shooter, who was subsequently shot during the encounter. Details regarding the condition of both the injured individual and the alleged shooter remain unclear.
The Pickens County VA clinic, which opened in the summer of 2020, offers crucial health services including primary care, specialty health services, laboratory testing, telehealth, and mental health care to local veterans.
With a population of about 5,000, Jasper is roughly 60 miles north of downtown Atlanta and is known as Georgia’s “First Mountain City.” Witnesses reported seeing various emergency vehicles responding to the scene amid a flurry of activity.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with law enforcement officers in tactical gear surrounding the clinic area as they worked to secure the premises and investigate the aftermath of the shooting.
