After a major diplomatic spat, Mexico and Peru are back in each other’s diplomatic circles. The rift began when former Peruvian prime minister Betssy Chávez asked Mexico’s embassy for asylum in November 2025.
Both governments cited their long‑standing friendship and legal principles as the reason for mending ties. Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum greeted Chávez, and Peru’s foreign ministry said the former prime minister could travel safely to Mexico while still holding the right to extradite him.
The rekindling comes as Peru’s new president, Keiko Fujimori, takes office. Fujimori has hinted at a thaw in relations and a focus on stronger security cooperation.
In the backdrop, former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo was convicted for a 2022 coup attempt. His sentencing last November highlighted the country’s ongoing political turbulence.
For Mexico and Peru, the restoration marks a new era of outreach and shared interests across Latin America.
