The National Rifle Association (NRA) has joined other US gun lobby groups in calling for a 'full investigation' by the Trump administration into the killing of Alex Pretti in Minnesota.
Comments from the NRA come after a border agent fatally shot Pretti—a registered nurse at a Veterans Affairs hospital—in Minneapolis on Saturday.
State and federal officials have given starkly different accounts. The Trump administration claimed Pretti carried a gun and posed a danger to officers; however, no available video shows him holding a firearm.
The NRA criticized a statement from a federal prosecutor that implied individuals carrying guns risk being lawfully shot by officers, deeming it 'dangerous and wrong.'
They urged responsible public voices to await a thorough investigation instead of generalizing and demonizing law-abiding gun owners.
The incident triggered a backlash not only from the NRA but also from other gun advocacy groups and politicians who stressed the constitutional right to bear arms, highlighting the ongoing debate over gun rights in America.
