Nigeria Mourns: 32 Lost in Military Plane Crash

A military ATR‑42 went down in a swampy area of Ondo State Sunday, killing 25 passengers and 7 crew members. The plane was on a routine run from Benin City to Lagos when it vanished at 0913 local time.

Rescue teams found wreckage and a plume of smoke rising from the site. Residents reported clothes and shoes scattered around the wreckage, underscoring the seriousness of the accident.

President Bola Tinubu declared three days of national mourning and ordered all flags across the country to fly at half‑mast as a sign of respect for the victims.

Nigerian Air Force officials confirmed the aircraft’s tail number was NGR 931 and that an investigation has begun to uncover what caused the aircraft to disappear and crash. The Air Force is also interviewing witnesses and reviewing flight data.

This crash is one of the deadliest aviation accidents in Nigeria in recent years, following the 2021 crashes that killed senior military officers and crew. Authorities are urging for improved safety protocols in the country’s armed forces flights.

Stay tuned for updates on the investigation and how these incidents may shape aviation safety in Nigeria.
