The French Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte is reeling from the aftermath of yet another storm, Dikeledi, which recently made landfall in Madagascar before passing dangerously close to Mayotte. Authorities have issued the highest state of alert as they warn of potential flash floods and violent winds, with videos showing significant flooding and downed power lines circulating on social media.
Just last month, Cyclone Chido devastated the islands, leading to tragic loss of life and destruction. Unfortunately, the latest storm forced at least 14,500 residents into emergency shelters. François-Xavier Bieuville, the local prefect, expressed concerns that heavy rain could continue, exacerbating the situation.
As the storm moves away, it is expected to intensify into a tropical cyclone near Mozambique's coast. However, the region is still recovering from the impacts of Cyclone Chido, which was declared the worst storm to hit Mayotte in nearly a century, claiming 39 confirmed lives and causing widespread destruction in a community already facing struggles with poverty and housing issues.
