HOUSTON (AP) — Hurricane season can be stressful for individuals living near storm paths, as powerful winds and heavy rains may cause extensive damage. Preparing in advance can significantly reduce stress before a storm approaches, according to emergency management officials. Having a solid plan that includes deciding whether to stay or evacuate is essential.
Don't be complacent; take preparedness seriously. Invest time now to do things that will make a difference for you and your loved ones when an emergency strikes, said Brian Mason, Houston's Emergency Management Office director.
Effective Storm Prep Tips
Before the storm season, secure outdoor furniture and equipment, which can turn into dangerous projectiles. Additionally, board windows and store important documents in waterproof containers to prevent damage during evacuation.
Compile an Emergency Kit
Each household should have an emergency kit with essentials like at least one gallon of water per person per day for up to seven days, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications, and a battery-operated radio. Don't forget about pets—ensure they have enough food and water.
Know Your Evacuation Routes
In case of an evacuation, map out your routes and identify alternatives should primary roads be overcrowded. Keeping vehicles fueled is also advised.
Having a plan not only preps you for potential storms but also reduces anxiety as events unfold. Prioritize safety preparations now to be well equipped for the future.
