U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth kicked off his first official trip to Asia in the Philippines, aiming to cement alliances amid growing tensions with China. At a news conference in Manila, Hegseth emphasized America’s dedication to deter threats posed by Beijing, stating the Trump administration would "truly prioritize" the region.

He announced upcoming visits to Japan, Australia, and South Korea, all critical allies with defense treaties with the U.S. This came as both the Philippines and Japan face heightened tensions due to China's aggressive territorial claims in the South China Sea and East China Sea, respectively.

During his meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Hegseth underscored the need for enhanced deterrence, citing the "threats from the communist Chinese." This visit signifies a renewed focus on Asia, acknowledging concerns over U.S. commitments in the global arena.
