In Odisha’s forest, locals found five young orangutans—critically endangered primates that normally live in Indonesia and Malaysia—eating bananas and basking in a shaded tree. The sudden appearance of the animals, only a few days old and found alone far from their native habitat, prompted an investigation into possible illegal trafficking and abandonment. Forest officials suspect transport by road near a highway, and the animals are now in quarantine at Nandankanan Zoo. Experts warn that such babies ordinarily stay with mothers to learn survival skills, and their loss could threaten the species’ already precarious survival.
