Crushing Defeat of a Wildcard Player in Nairobi Tournament
The organisers of a professional women's tournament are under fire after a wildcard player's poor performance went viral on social media. 21-year-old Hajar Abdelkader suffered a shocking defeat in her first-round match, losing 6-0, 6-0, while serving a staggering 20 double faults. Viewers were left bewildered, questioning whether Abdelkader had ever played tennis before.
In a match lasting just 37 minutes, Abdelkader managed to score only three points—two from her opponent's double faults and one unforced error. The match was part of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) W35 tournament held in Nairobi, organized by Tennis Kenya.
After the match, Tennis Kenya acknowledged the backlash and reached out to both Abdelkader and her opponent, Lorena Schaedel, offering support in light of the extensive media coverage. The organisation explained that Abdelkader applied last-minute for a wildcard entry after another player withdrew, aiming to maintain player balance and representation.
However, in retrospect, they admitted that allowing her participation was a mistake. The organization stated, The federation has taken note of this experience and will ensure that such an extremely rare occurrence never happens again, reiterating their commitment to fairness and transparency in competitions.
As the situation unfolded, the Egyptian Tennis Federation clarified that Abdelkader has no official registration as an Egyptian player and was participating through a wildcard granted by the Kenyan Tennis Federation. This incident raises broader questions about the selection processes for wildcard entries in professional tournaments.
Ultimately, both Tennis Kenya and the Egyptian Tennis Federation are eager to ensure that future tournaments uphold competitive integrity and foster a positive development environment for tennis across Africa.
