A heart-wrenching fire broke out early Monday morning in the trauma center of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, resulting in ten fatalities, all of whom were patients being treated in the intensive care unit. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi confirmed that 11 hospital staff members sustained burn injuries while attempting to save patients from the blaze, which began at approximately 2:30 AM local time.

The inferno is believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, highlighting the ongoing concern of hospital safety in India, where such incidents have occurred frequently. In the past few years, other tragedies have included fatalities of both critically ill patients and newborns in different ICUs across the country.

Fortunately, the fire was brought under control swiftly by the fire service, and emergency measures were taken to relocate patients to other areas within the hospital. The Chief Minister praised the bravery of the medical staff and security personnel who risked their lives during the rescue operation, ensuring that anyone injured receives the necessary medical attention.

To aid the grieving families, the Odisha state government has announced compensation and ordered a judicial inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire, promising strict actions against those responsible. This tragic event further emphasizes the importance of safety protocols in medical facilities, especially regarding electrical systems and emergency responses.
