PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — New video footage from the day of the Brown University shooting that killed two students and injured nine others was released Monday, with city officials stating that they had redacted the most graphic images to protect the victims and maintain community trust.

Transparency is crucial for our community, said Providence's Mayor Brett Smiley. He acknowledged that the release of the footage and audio might be traumatic for those still healing from the incident.

The footage features a call from Brown police confirming gunshots and updates on the suspect’s description. A chaotic scene was shown with officers trying to secure the building and evacuate students while communicating the severe situation.

Two students, Ella Cook and MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, lost their lives in the shooting. Just days later, the shooter, Claudio Neves Valente, also fatally shot an MIT professor, Nuno Loureiro.

The Justice Department stated that Valente had planned the attack for years, leaving behind videos in which he confessed but did not disclose a motive. The FBI discovered these videos during a search related to his death found in a storage facility.
