Tragic Fire in Lima Claims 10 Lives of Same Family

A blaze swirled through a La Victoria apartment early Wednesday, leaving a 10‑person family, including five children, buried in smoke and soot.

The fire erupted around 3:00 a.m. local time, engulfing a home belonging to a mattress‑making family who also owned electric motorcycles. Police report that the victims ranged from three to 15 years old, with adults aged 29 to 72 also trapped. A fifth adult and two others sustained injuries.

Officials suspect arson after local media noted the family had faced threats and extortion demands. Neighbors recalled unknown individuals setting fire to motorcycles parked outside; the flames swiftly merged with flimsy mattress‑making materials.

Seventeen people were present when the fire started. Seven managed to escape, but the rest could not leave the blaze, leaving bodies that police say were burned beyond recognition.

“Everyone in Peru is in mourning, and this tragedy sinks our nation into silence,” the National Police said in a statement.

The police are keeping a significant presence in the area to deter future criminal acts, underscoring concerns over safety amid the ongoing investigation. The case highlights the fragile balance of security in bustling districts of Lima.
