A former Nascar driver and his family were among the seven people killed in a plane crash at a regional airport in North Carolina, the car-racing organisation has said.

A highway patrol spokesman confirmed that Greg Biffle was among those who boarded the plane.

The Cessna C550 crashed while landing at Statesville Regional Airport around 10:20 local time (15:20GMT), officials reported.

NASCAR stated, Greg was more than a champion driver, he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many. Biffle passed away along with his wife, daughter, son, and three others.

Beyond his racing success, Biffle was known for his role in aiding North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, using his helicopter for rescue and supply delivery.

Tributes poured in from fans and officials alike, including North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, who praised Biffle's courage and compassion.

The aircraft, owned by a private company associated with Biffle, caught fire upon landing, with the investigation into the cause ongoing. The airport will remain closed as authorities manage the situation.

Biffle was one of the NASCAR's 75 Greatest Drivers, winning multiple championships and races throughout his two-decade career.
