One of the two members of the National Guard who were shot in Washington DC on Wednesday has died, US President Donald Trump stated. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, succumbed to her injuries, while the second National Guard member, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, is currently in serious condition. Both were shot at close range near Farragut Square shortly after 14:00 EST. One suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old from Afghanistan, has been arrested. Initial charges against him are expected to be upgraded to murder in the first degree.
On a Thanksgiving call, Trump confirmed Beckstrom's death, describing her as a 'highly respected, young, magnificent person'. The shooting is believed to have been premeditated and could lead to significant changes in immigration policy, particularly regarding individuals from Afghanistan and other countries.
Beckstrom, who had volunteered to serve over the Thanksgiving holiday, was part of a military police unit. Trump emphasized that the attack underscores a key national security issue and vows to review immigration protocols concerning third-world countries.
The suspect, Lakanwal, previously worked alongside US forces in Afghanistan and had been granted asylum in the US earlier this year. This incident has drawn attention to the risks faced by military personnel and raised concerns regarding the safety of service members deployed in domestic roles.
