Travelers across the U.S. experienced significant disruptions on Monday as over 3,600 flights were canceled and around 6,800 others delayed. This chaos was attributed to a combination of powerful storms sweeping through the eastern states and ongoing issues related to a partial government shutdown impacting TSA staffing at airports.
Major airports in New York, Chicago, and Atlanta were among the hardest hit, with reports of ground stops and delays due to severe weather conditions that included snow, high winds, and tornado warnings from the National Weather Service.
Affected travelers shared their frustrations, such as Kelly Price, who found herself stranded at the airport with her family after their flight was canceled. She lamented having to sleep on the floor of the airport while awaiting the next available flight, which is now scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
Simultaneously, the ongoing shutdown since February 14 has put pressure on TSA staff, leading to longer security lines and diminished services. Executives from major airlines have urged Congress to resolve the funding issues to prevent disruptions in the future, emphasizing the financial difficulties faced by TSA workers during the shutdown.
As the storm continues to impact air travel, many hope for swift resolution and less chaotic journeys ahead.
