US President Donald Trump has said he will meet his Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro at the White House in the 'near future', just days after highlighting an operation targeting Colombia. The US recently seized the president of neighboring Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, sparking tensions in the region.
During a call, Petro addressed issues surrounding drugs and other disagreements, appreciating Petro's tone despite a prior warning from Trump to 'watch his ass'. Colombia remains a key player in the region's drug trade, notably cocaine, along with significant oil reserves.
Following military operations in Venezuela, Trump indicated that he would take strict measures against Colombian drug production. Petro, however, has voiced concerns that US military actions could provoke aggressive responses from Colombia.
Despite their turbulent exchanges, Trump characterized his conversation with Petro as a 'Great Honor' and indicated that plans would be made for Petro to visit Washington.
Petro had warned about the implications of the US's presence in Colombia, advocating for a cooperative approach to reduce drug trafficking instead of military intervention. The upcoming meeting aims to address these critical issues between the two countries.
