In brief

Valerie, the miniature dachshund, was rescued on Kangaroo Island, marking an extraordinary effort by volunteers and her devoted owners.

In a story that defies the odds, a miniature dachshund named Valerie has been found alive after spending 529 days in the Australian wilderness. Valerie went missing during a camping trip on Kangaroo Island when her owners, Georgia Gardner and Joshua Fishlock, briefly left her in a playpen while they went fishing. Despite the intense heat and dangerous wildlife, including venomous snakes, Valerie survived by relying on her instincts. The rescue mission was spearheaded by Kangala Wildlife Rescue, which utilized Ms. Gardner’s t-shirt to create a scent trail leading to a specially designed trap. The team dedicated over 1,000 hours to locate her, covering more than 5,000 kilometers. Their efforts included setting up surveillance cameras and baiting the trap with food, clothes, and toys from home.As the search dragged on, sightings of a dog matching Valerie’s description began to surface, igniting hope among the volunteers. Director Lisa Karran approached Valerie softly to calm her after she was trapped, ensuring a safe recovery. "Sometimes it takes time, but you can’t give up hope," Ms. Gardner posted after the reunion. Valerie's story is not just about survival; it's a reminder that love and determination can move mountains — or at least bring a beloved pet back home.
