In brief

Over 50,000 Canada Post workers are on strike, impacting deliveries across the country and leaving many communities scrambling for alternatives as Christmas nears.

The ongoing strike by Canada Post employees, which has stretched into its fourth week, is creating holiday hurdles for families like Elizabeth Teasdale's in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Normally, she fills a room with 20 to 30 gifts by now, but this year she has only received two packages. As deliveries fall behind, federal labor minister Steven MacKinnon is pushing for a resolution and has called upon the Canada Industrial Relations Board to intervene. This strike heavily impacts remote communities, where Canada Post is the sole delivery service. Although people like Teasdale are trying to keep their spirits high, she acknowledges the challenge: “We’ll get around this. It is what it is.”
