Marla-Svenja Liebich, a transgender far-right extremist, has stirred up controversy in Germany regarding where she will serve her prison sentence. Sentenced in July 2023 to a year and a half in prison for incitement to hatred, defamation, and insult, Liebich, previously known as Sven Liebich, has appealed her sentence without success.
In late 2024, under Germany's recent Self-Determination Act, Liebich changed her registered gender from male to female and adopted her new name. Critics in the media doubt the authenticity of her transition, noting her history as a member of the neo-Nazi group Blood and Honour and her past queerphobic remarks.
Despite Liebich’s claims of false representation, legal challenges against media outlets have been dismissed as unfounded. Following her conviction, she confirmed to her followers that she would begin her prison term at Chemnitz women’s prison on August 29, 2025.
The Chief Public Prosecutor of Halle stated that the prison administration would decide whether Liebich poses a security risk, which could mean a transfer to a male facility. Meanwhile, she recently lost a legal case against journalist Julian Reichelt, as courts upheld the right to question the genuineness of her gender change amidst her extremist past.
