At least 10 people lost their lives Wednesday in Bengaluru when a celebratory crowd turned deadly outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Fans flocked to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first-ever title win in the Indian Premier League (IPL), only to face a chaotic situation at the gates.

The city had initially planned a victory parade to honor the team, but concerns of a potential stampede led to its cancellation. However, festivities continued inside the stadium, and tensions mounted as eager fans attempted to push through the entrance. Tragically, people were trampled as the crowd surged.

Authorities confirmed that six individuals died at Bowring Hospital, while a further four and twelve additional injuries were reported at Vydehi Hospital. Witnesses described the scene as intensely chaotic, with police struggling to manage the rapidly growing crowd.

Political leaders in Karnataka expressed outrage over the event's poor planning, demanding accountability from the state government. “They were more interested in publicity than safety,” said B.Y. Vijayendra of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Karnataka's Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, acknowledged the overwhelming crowd and stated his condolences, emphasizing how a festive moment turned tragic. With over 5,000 police officers deployed, the situation quickly spiraled beyond control.

The IPL is known for its large fanbase and high-stakes excitement, with the Bengaluru team boasting a dedicated following led by cricket icon Virat Kohli. The team achieved its milestone victory just a day prior, defeating Punjab in front of over 90,000 fans. However, this triumph was overshadowed by the tragedy that unfolded at the gates.
