Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned as 'terrorism' a Russian drone attack on a passenger train that local officials say killed at least four people. Zelensky said another four people were missing after the train with more than 200 people on board was hit in Ukraine's north-eastern Kharkiv region on Tuesday.
Earlier, officials in Ukraine's southern port of Odesa reported three deaths from an overnight Russian drone attack. Russia has not commented on these incidents. Recently, Moscow has increased drone and missile strikes targeting Ukraine's energy and transport infrastructure, straining the nation as it faces its harshest winter in years.
In a post on social media late Tuesday, Zelensky affirmed, 'In any country, a drone strike on a civilian train would be considered purely as terrorism,' highlighting the absence of 'military justification' for such attacks. The Kharkiv regional prosecutor's office mentioned that one drone struck a carriage directly, while others exploded nearby.
The attack not only resulted in multiple casualties but has left many across Ukraine without heating, electricity, and water amid the ongoing conflict that began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. The consequences are severe, with millions affected as winter intensifies. Despite recent peace talks involving various stakeholders, the environment remains fraught with tension and violence, as aerial assaults on civilian targets continue.
