A Russian drone attack on a market in southern Ukraine has killed five people and injured 21, including a 14-year-old girl, according to the prosecutor general's office. The attack took place at 09:50 local time in the town of Nikopol, located just across the Dnipro river from Russian-occupied territory. Regional prosecutor images show the market kiosks destroyed, littered with metal, glass, and food debris.
This incident follows a series of attacks across Ukraine that claimed at least 15 civilian lives on Friday. In retaliation, Ukraine launched a drone and missile attack on the Russian city of Taganrog, resulting in casualties. A Ukrainian Defense Ministry official attributed some casualties to 'Russian air defense operations.'
Nikopol is frequently targeted, with many of its residents having fled for safety as the conflict persists. On the day of the attack, two additional strikes injured two men in the same area. The prosecutor's office is investigating the incident as a potential war crime.
Amid this violence, President Zelensky proposed a truce for the Easter holidays, though it has not been acknowledged by Russia. The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched nearly 300 drones against Ukraine overnight, with casualties arising from strikes in Kharkiv and the Sumy region, while Russia claimed to have downed 85 Ukrainian drones. The intensity and frequency of Russia's daytime attacks have been increasing lately, signaling a troubling escalation in hostilities.
