Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned a US decision to extend the period during which Russia is allowed to sell oil despite Western sanctions. The extension allows countries to purchase Russian oil and petroleum products already loaded on vessels at sea until May 16. The US argues that the waiver is meant to ease the energy supply crunch sparked by the US-Israel war with Iran. However, Zelensky stated, 'every dollar paid for Russian oil is money for the war' in Ukraine, highlighting that the ongoing conflict has been fueled by Western sanctions against Russia since President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion in February 2022. The US's move to ease Russian sanctions was widely criticized by Zelensky and European allies, as it may financially empower Russia's military actions in Ukraine, especially given its substantial shadow fleet facilitating oil sales. Aside from the oil issue, the geopolitical landscape remains fraught with tension, and the ongoing war has resulted in a stalemate, with Russia controlling about 20% of Ukrainian territory. Efforts to negotiate peace have stalled due to the conflict in Iran.
