The Dardanelles Strait, a crucial waterway linking Europe and Asia, has been temporarily closed to maritime traffic due to rampant wildfires in north-western Turkey. The Turkish transport ministry issued the closure as a safety precaution amid spreading blazes near the city of Canakkale, which prompted evacuations for nearby residents.
Firefighters have been deployed to combat the flames, utilizing specialized planes and helicopters in the effort. Local officials noted that strong winds have intensified the wildfires during this hot, dry summer, complicating containment efforts.
This strait is vital for commercial shipping; in 2024 alone, it saw nearly 46,000 vessels moving through its waters. Meanwhile, Canakkale’s main airport has halted regular passenger flights, although firefighting and search operations continue from there.
Hundreds of wildfires have emerged across Turkey this season, leading to significant evacuations. Tragically, in July, at least 10 forestry and rescue personnel lost their lives while battling blazes in the central Eskisehir province, highlighting the severe impact of this ongoing crisis as fire conditions worsen with extreme weather.
