The City of Windhoek has warned residents against holding parties in cemeteries following a recent event at Gammams cemetery that sparked outrage. Attendees reportedly displayed seating arrangements, cooler boxes, and alcohol, turning the solemn site into a party venue. Witnesses described the scene as disgraceful, with one resident noting that the cemetery resembled a shebeen rather than a place of rest.

Officials reported that the gathering left the site littered with bottles and cans, prompting a strong statement from the City. They emphasized that such behavior is not only disrespectful to the deceased but also disturbs other grieving families. The City declared that cemeteries are sacred spaces reserved for burials and remembrance, and gatherings involving alcohol consumption and littering are strictly prohibited.

In light of this incident, authorities will implement strict monitoring and enforcement to protect the dignity of burial sites. This is not the first time Gammams cemetery has been in the news; a previous incident in 2021 noted a man firing shots during a funeral.
