Romania’s Justice Minister, Radu Marinescu, has raised eyebrows after the Tate brothers—Andrew and Tristan—were permitted to leave the country despite serious allegations hanging over them. The controversial influencers had been under a travel ban for over two years, which was lifted last Thursday, enabling them to fly to the US. Marinescu has urged the special prosecution service, known as Dilcot, to investigate why they were allowed to leave. The Tates, facing numerous charges including human trafficking and rape, have denied all allegations against them.
The brothers, both dual US-UK citizens, were arrested in Romania in 2022 for allegedly forming a criminal group that exploited women. Despite not having their legal troubles resolved, they quickly exited Romania, raising suspicions of possible political influence. Several Romanians are voicing concerns, suggesting that wealth and fame may have played a role in their treatment under the law. Marinescu has warned that the brothers could face pre-trial detention if they fail to return. The situation has ignited debate over the equality of legal protections based on social status.
